Background of the Study
School security has become a growing concern globally, necessitating the adoption of advanced security measures to ensure the safety of students, staff, and school property. Traditional security systems, such as manual attendance registers and physical identification cards, have proven to be inadequate in addressing security challenges in schools (Ogunleye & Musa, 2024). The increasing incidences of unauthorized access, student impersonation, and security breaches call for the adoption of biometric security systems, which offer a more robust and reliable method of identity verification.
Biometric security systems use unique physiological or behavioral characteristics, such as fingerprints, facial recognition, or iris scans, to authenticate individuals. These systems provide an efficient way of monitoring entry and exit points, reducing unauthorized access, and ensuring accountability within school premises (Adamu & Okonkwo, 2024). Many developed countries have successfully integrated biometrics into their educational institutions, leading to improved security and administrative efficiency. However, in many secondary schools in Nigeria, particularly in Makurdi Local Government Area, the adoption of such technology remains limited.
The slow adoption of biometric security systems in schools may be attributed to factors such as cost, lack of technical expertise, resistance to change, and concerns regarding data privacy (Bello & Ibrahim, 2024). Despite these challenges, biometric systems offer significant benefits, including improved attendance monitoring, enhanced school security, and streamlined administrative processes. Given the security concerns in schools across Nigeria, it is crucial to investigate the extent to which biometric security systems are being adopted and the factors influencing their implementation in secondary schools in Makurdi.
School premises in Makurdi Local Government Area face security challenges such as unauthorized access, student truancy, and inefficient attendance management. Traditional security measures, such as paper-based records and manual identity checks, have proven to be ineffective in addressing these issues (Usman & Danjuma, 2024). This has led to increased cases of theft, student impersonation, and safety concerns among stakeholders.
While biometric security systems have been recognized as a viable solution to these challenges, their adoption in secondary schools remains low. Several factors, including cost, infrastructure requirements, and user acceptance, influence the decision to implement biometric security solutions in schools (Aliyu & Olatunji, 2024). Without a clear understanding of these factors, schools may struggle to implement effective security measures that protect students and staff.
This study aims to investigate the extent of biometric security system adoption in secondary schools in Makurdi, the challenges hindering their implementation, and the potential benefits they offer. The findings will provide insights into how schools can effectively integrate biometric security solutions to enhance safety and administrative efficiency.

This study is significant as it provides insights into the adoption and effectiveness of biometric security systems in secondary schools. The findings will assist school administrators, policymakers, and security experts in understanding the benefits and challenges of biometric security adoption. Furthermore, the study will contribute to discussions on school security improvements, helping educational institutions develop strategies for implementing biometric systems to enhance safety and administrative operations. The research will also serve as a reference for future studies on biometric technology in education.
This study focuses on the adoption of biometric security systems in secondary schools in Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State. It examines the extent of biometric system implementation, the challenges associated with their adoption, and their impact on school security and administration. The study does not cover the technical aspects of biometric system development or compare biometric solutions with other security technologies. Limitations may include reluctance from school administrators to provide security-related data and possible resistance from staff or students regarding biometric adoption.
